Overdrafts occur when there are not enough funds in your checking account to cover a check, an ATM withdrawal, or a debit purchase. Should this happen to you, we do our best to help you cover the overdraft so you can avoid the inconvenience.
Overdrafts Options
Transfer from Savings
If your account has insufficient funds when an item is presented for payment, we will first attempt to transfer the needed funds from your savings. There is a $3 fee for this service. If there the funds are not available in your savings, you have the following options.
Overdraft Privilege
Overdraft Privilege allows EPFCU to pay an item for you, and allow you to avoid the inconvenience of being turned away at a cashier or incurring additional merchant fees for returned checks.†
If you opt in for Overdraft Privilege, we may pay your checks, drafts, Electronic Funds Transfers (EFTs), automatic bill payments, and any other transactions made using your checking account number, up to a predetermined amount, as well as overdrafts created from ATM and debit card transactions. Your account will be assessed our standard $30 Overdraft Privilege Fee for handling of each item paid.
If you do NOT opt in for Overdraft Privilege, we will not honor the overdraft and your account will be charged a $35 per item Non-Sufficient Funds (NSF) fee, in addition to any fees from the merchant.
You may opt in for Overdraft Privilege for debit card and everyday ATM transactions by calling Member Services at 202-318-1991, Option 3; or submitting a Debit Card/Everyday ATM Transactions Overdraft Privilege Opt-In Form (PDF).
Overdraft Line of Credit
You can establish a Personal Line of Credit to be used as overdraft protection on your checking account in the event your Savings can’t cover the overdraft.^ This option allows you to protect yourself against overdrafts without incurring an overdraft fee per occurrence. You can also access your line of credit for large or special purchases.
†The total of the discretionary Overdraft Privilege (negative) balance, which includes any and all fees and charges, including all non-sufficient funds/overdraft fees, is due and payable upon demand. This privilege for checking accounts will generally be limited to a maximum overdraft (negative) balance of $700. Any and all fees and charges, including without limitation NSF Fees, will be included as part of this maximum amount.
