Lots of financial institutions boast of free checking. But you undoubtedly find features that make them anything but free.

No Gimmick Checking

  • No minimum balance
  • No monthly service charges
  • No per-check fees

Mastercard® Debit Card

Accepted wherever Mastercard debit cards are used, use your EPFCU Mastercard Debit Card for nearly all your day-to-day transactions. Funds are automatically deducted from your checking account. Plus, your Mastercard Debit Card doubles as an ATM Card — withdraw cash, transfer balances and make deposits at applicable ATMs. Find a surcharge-free ATM near you.

Overdraft Protection

Overdrafts occur when there are not enough funds in your checking account to cover a check, an ATM withdrawal, or a debit purchase. If your account is short when an item is presented for payment, we will first attempt to transfer from your savings to cover the item. We offer two ways to protect yourself should your savings not cover the overdraft.

Overdraft Line of Credit

You can establish a Personal Line of Credit to be used as overdraft protection on your checking account. When needed, we will issue a loan advance to cover the overdraft. If your line of credit has reached its limit, we will attempt a transfer from your savings and your account will be charged a $2 fee. You can also access your line of credit for large or special purchases. Apply for a Personal Line of Credit

Overdraft Privilege

When you opt in for our Overdraft Privilege service, we may pay your overdraft checks and some other overdraft transactions* up to a predetermined amount, as well as overdrafts created from everyday ATM and debit card transactions. Your account will be assessed our standard $30 Overdraft Privilege Fee for handling of each item paid; however, you will avoid the embarrassment of being turned away at the cashier or incurring additional merchant fees for returned checks.**

If you do not opt in for Overdraft Privilege, we will not honor the overdraft and your account will be charged a $35 per item NSF fee.

Opt in for Overdraft Privilege for debit card and everyday ATM transactions by calling Member Services at 202-318-1991, Option 3; or submitting a Debit Card/Everyday ATM Transactions Overdraft Privilege Opt-In Form (PDF).
